Bathurst 1981 was not to be Brocks' year, after a frantic battle for the lead in the opening stages of the race, rear axle problems dropped Brock back to 21st position. The race distance was cut short due to a multi-car accident at McPhilliamy Park. It was also to be the last year Peter Brock would share the wheel of the "05" Commodore with Jim Richards.
